She was hunting. Stalking. Following. Tracking. Watching, with those dark drown eyes of hers. She had been following this wiggling little critter for yards and yards, waiting for the precise moment to tackle it and slice off the head before the fangs got at her flesh. This was the work of a cunning beast, and Jabberwock scoffed to think a coyote would ever brave his scrawny neck to rid the canyon of a poisonous fiend. But she was just a hero, through and through! Not that that mattered much to her- the lunatic, the crazy, the one who usually got avoided. No, she was out this fine morning for a different reason. Being alone. While the land was quiet, and few creatures had run into her around the other areas, Jabberwock still sought escape from the eyes she knew could be watching at any moment. And how better to escape watchful eyes than to enter such an open land that eyes are seen quickly, if not immediately? Scuffling in the deeper bits of the canyon, at the base of the jutting plateaus, who would be idiotic enough to squeeze down the steep paths and pad along the winding trails? THAT was the odd little fox's reason... or at least as much of a reason as one could get out of her, for being around.
Distracted from her hunting for a split second, as if she had halted to reconsider what a stupidly risky task she was performing, the silver fox shook her head solemnly, lowered her shadowed belly to the red earth, and continued in her tracking. "It is incredibly easy to follow a snake," she whispered aloud, the words seeming to carry in the empty and echoing cavern of the cracks between plateaus. "They wiggle and worm themselves across dust, leaving 'S's' in the sand for any intelligent beast to follow. Or unintelligent, if they are idiots and don't know how to handle themselves with the poisonous serpents." She chuckled to herself, picturing a mangy coyote sticking his paws in unknown holes, seeing a black slithering form rush like liquid fire out of the obstruction in the earth, winding up the moronic ones leg... and then the image faded, as a rattling noise came forth to distract her attentions. Chhhhhhhhkkachkkkachkkkkka! A series of long rattles, a hollow and strange sound in the quietness of the cavern, rose up like music from a spot a few yards in front of the fox. An almost gleeful burst of readiness burbled up in the vixen, causing the brush of a tail she took so much pride in to whisk excitedly behind her. She was preparing for the kill, preparing to take on this snake.... like a true fool.
"IT IS A SERPENT, EVIL. YOU MUST KILL IT." A murmur, sounding oddly threatening in the fox's crackling throat. But a thought accompanied such a vocal burst of aggression. /You know, I'm alone. I don't need these bursts of... other-ness. I don't need to kill anything, for there is no one to convince. I don't need this defense./ A frown, tugging at the canines lips. "IT WILL HURT SOMEONE. A PUP. A STUPID PUP, WHO WOULD TRY AND PLAY WITH IT." /But pups need to learn, though certainly not by action. Maybe show it to the kidlings before you killed it... And only a stupid pair of vixen and dog would allow their child anywhere near this canyon. It is dangerous here./ "IT'S DANGEROUS EVERYWHERE." /You're dangerous everywhere./ "I AM YOU, THIS IS OBVIOUS." /You are not me, you are an aggressive and defensive side of me. You aren't supposed to be out. The calm me is out. I AM ALONE!/ The fox, settled back onto her haunches, appeared for all the world to be whispering to herself, and replying to every word her mouth had form with blank stares in which she retorted... in her own mind. If only another beast could see her now! They thought she was mad before! But Jabberwock, who had long decided she would kill the snake, seemed to lift her hindquarters from the earth and take slow, cautious steps toward the coiled reptile, weaving side to side with each raise of a paw like a serpent herself. Yes.. she would kill it. Who knew? Perhaps it would save a life someday, the loss of one more snake in this world. So the fox advanced, watching, waiting, for the snakes movements. They always tried to strike, when coiled like that. It was how things worked. But Jabberwock was expecting it. Expecting the little whipcord of an animal to launch its sharp fangs at her. She was ready. She was watching.
ooc; Sorry if this sounds kind of jumble and.. psychotic. I haven't played crazy in a long time, so I'm rusty. Not to mention my muse just... faded. ^^'

OoC: Mmmm, a bit long maybe? Oh well. This is also my first (and last?) attempt at this style of table. I've realized the edges don't match up perfectly.
These were the magnificent Red Canyons, so called for their luxurious sand dunes of a crimson hue. This was an expanse of smoothly carved hills, shaped to resemble the rolling waves of an ocean. However, this sea of scarlet was entirely unscathed; its surface was a silky sheen with no pawprints marring it. That is, except for the tracks Illusion left remaining. And the ones another strange canine had forged.
Illusion was a mere scarlet blur amidst countless waves of scarlet. As a camouflage, she had spent a good half an hour burrowing deep into the blazing sand, allowing the grit to color her fur to the exact shade. It had also seared some of her thin, glossy fur off; it being cooked by the heat of the afternoon sun. Although the burn was agonizing, she displayed none of the emotions often associated with pain. After all, she was very accustomed with its feeling.
At this moment, she was stealthily creeping along the high walls formed by these hills to get away from it all. She wanted nothing to do with the general civilization; she wanted not to feel their hatred and fear of her. So she had escaped to this barren wasteland in search of tranquility and peace. But really anything as long as she needed not to linger with the other mingling canines. Unfortunately, it seemed that she could never truly flee from their clutches. She would never escape the mindless torture and hurt received from those particularly cruel individuals. She would never be free.
These pessimistic thoughts had been generated ever since she had glimpsed the tracks of another. Wearily, she trudged onward. But alas, her path led her to intersect with that of the other’s. And as she approached the other canine, her dark eyes glinted in recognition. This was Jabberwock, the neighborhood lunatic. She was a silver fox, with a deep indigo coat that shone in the glaring sunlight. Her snow-white tipped tail was swishing in the bare breeze, now tinged with the trademark crimson of the canyons. Her umber eyes displayed immense concentration; her lips appeared taut from where Illusion was gazing. Ahead of Jabberwock was a curved, cylindrical length of… snake. A hiss caught in her throat. She detested those loathsome, sneaky creatures, yet pitied them all the same. After all, they received the same persecution she had.
Then, the fox dropped to the sand, assuming a tracking poise. Simultaneously, a steady drift of whispering began, dry and wispy as the coarse fur now lining Illusion’s pelt. Pondering this, she imagined a third canine lurking nearby, the cause of the whispers.
No, it’s probably Jabberwock conversing with herself as usual, she consoled herself. There were no others in these canyons, or at least she hoped not. One other was bad enough.
This continued for some time until a rattling sound drowned out the whispers. The serpent was coiled and prepared to strike. Now this would get interesting. Flashing a leering grin, Illusion fantasized the fox being poisoned by the serpent’s lethal venom and perishing, thus eliminating the only barrier between herself and peace.
