A cool breeze tickles your throat as the tinkling melody of crystal bells is heard. The spicy aroma of incense wafts into your nostrils. Your senses are relaxed, and somehow sharper because of it. Your languid gait leads you to a clearing. A tawny wolf streaked with umber waits patiently by the edge of a calming pond, facing the water’s mirror-like surface. She strikes an impressive presence, cool as a monarch, but calm as the pond. As you soundlessly approach her, she makes no movement.
”Welcome to the realm of Luna,” she greets you quietly, still keeping absolutely rigid. ”She is approaching quickly. You can hear her sing in the night air. Good, you are silent. This is one of the many rituals we have here as the sacred Hu’li… Come closer, let me speak.”
Your dream-like stance is terminated as you realize there is no need to go any closer. Unconsciously, you had been drawn to her side. This must be the Hu’li alpha. Finally, she averts her gaze form the pond to stare into your eyes, a penetrating gaze that captures you. Her captivating speech continues.
”I am she of whom the stars sing, she of whom the rivers praise. The one who reads the sky, reads the dawn, the dusk, and everything in between. It is all connected, centered around the fair Luna.” She pauses dramatically, although you know in your heart she speaks the truth. Then she spoke again, this time in a different color of tone. ”You have come to join the Hu’li, have you not? You have made a most wise decision. But I warn you: we are a mystic people. We dance with the rotations of Luna. We howl the stars up, and then down. And we will not tolerate disobedience. Once you join, you will be linked to the celestial forever. Now, please fill out this to become one of us.”
She hands you a scroll, on which is inscribed your oath of loyalty to the Hu’li, a required pledge of all hopefuls. She gives you a stick of charcoal to grind into a fine powder and a stone bowl filled with water. You pound the charcoal to dust and tip it into the bowl, where it seeps into a mass of cloudy gray. You dip an extended claw into the ink and begin to write.

Alpha –
The most powerful, serene, and religious wolf. It takes great skill in the field of celestial to uphold this high ranking. Your word is your command. Loyalty to the alpha is required. They are feared and respected for their immense power and control. Only one male alpha is needed as Dusk’s mate.
Beta –
The next highest ranking. Betas are powerful and are granted the knowledge of interpreting the skies. They are respected and number not many. They are the alphas’ most trusted wolves. They trail after the alphas and perform much of the same tasks as alphas, like conducting religious ceremonies and overseeing the lower rankings. Position is not granted. It is bestowed only on the worthy. Wolves must earn this title.
Delta –
An upper-medium ranking bestowed on wolves with specialties in certain subjects. For example, high ranking hunters, guardians, advisors, educators, and pup care-takers fall into this category. Many spots here are available but few become Delta immediately. Most start out as Sub-ordinates.
Zeta –
A ranking consisting of the elders of Hu’li. All wolves, except alphas and betas, above the age of 7-8 are considered elders, or Zeta. Their tasks include shaman and story-teller. If, however, the wolf is Beta or Alpha, they keep their title unless they decide to retire. The zetas are not classified as a social ranking; they’re simply wolves in retirement, but are more respected than Sub-ordinates. They feed first upon any carcasses they choose because of their disability towards hunting.
Sub-ordinate –
A slightly lower ranking than Delta. This includes the same occupations as Deltas, only they’re either apprentices at it or lack experience. This group also consists of adolescent pups.
Iota –
This is also not considered much of a social ranking because it contains all young pups: whether it be newborn or approaching adolescence. They typically range from just born to around a year and some.
Omega –
Aside from being evicted from the Hu’li, Omega is the lowest a wolf can go. Usually, omegas have committed a high sin, disrespected the alphas or betas, or otherwise shown disloyalty. They are the last to feed on food and are confined to isolated dens. They receive no light unless the pack is migrating, no visitors except for other omegas, and no education. They are fed once a day and given one small rabbit or rodent for all of the omegas. They can, however, move up from their status. If they’ve done something extraordinarily helpful or have remained faithfully for three months, they will be released into the Sub-ordinate class.
